Cook County Secession Proposal: Illinois Voters to Weigh In on Creating New State

Illinois – Voters across several Illinois counties are expected to encounter a significant question on their ballots this fall: Should Cook County, which encompasses Chicago and its expansive suburbs, break away to form a new state? Although the vote is non-binding, it signals a growing interest among residents in exploring the possibility of separating Cook County from the rest of Illinois.

This November, voters in at least seven Illinois counties, including Calhoun, Clinton, Greene, Iroquois, Jersey, Madison, and Perry, will decide on whether to pursue discussions regarding this separation. The counties considering the measure are spread across the state, with four of them—Calhoun, Clinton, Jersey, and Madison—situated within the Greater St. Louis Metropolitan Area.

The ballot question, which has been certified by the Calhoun County Clerk’s Office and approved by county boards in Clinton, Jersey, and Madison earlier this year, will ask:
