2 Phoenix police officers shot, suspect in custody

A suspect has been arrested following a shooting Tuesday night during which two Phoenix police officers were injured, authorities said.

Saul Bal, 41, has been book for attempted homicide, according to a Phoenix Police Department release.

At about 6:30 p.m. Sept. 3, a two-person patrol unit was dispatched on a call of a man trying to break into a vehicle by a home near 16 th and Brill streets, police said.

Officers approached the suspect who fled on foot and, after a short pursuit, he started shooting at them, the release stated. Both officers were hit. One officer returned fire, but Bal was not struck.

Bal took off again, police said, but was arrested nearby by other officers.

The injured officers were rushed to a hospital where one was in critical condition early Wednesday.

The second officer is listed in stable condition.

“The officers are surrounded by family and loved ones, and we ask that you keep everyone affected by this cowardly act in your thoughts and prayers,” Chief Michael Sullivan said.
