Simplified SSI Application: Streamlined Process for Social Security Benefits

New efforts are underway to simplify applying for Supplemental Security Income benefits.

NEW JERSEY – The Social Security Administration (SSA) is introducing a new, streamlined online application for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, aimed at simplifying the process for applicants.

Announced in late August, the revamped application—referred to as iClaim expansion—will feature plain-language questions, pre-populated answers where possible, and seamless transitions. The goal is to reduce the time it takes to apply and to accelerate initial claim decisions.

SSA Commissioner Martin O’Malley emphasized the importance of easing the burden for those in need. “People in our communities who need this crucial safety net deserve the dignity of an application process that is less burdensome and more accessible,” O’Malley said.

Starting in December, the updated system will be available to first-time applicants aged 18 to 65 who have never been married and are seeking both Social Security and SSI benefits. Full access for all applicants is expected by late 2025.
