World’ Largest Drive-In Is in Georgia!

Did you know that the world’s largest drive-in restaurant is located right here in the state of Georgia? It’s true!

This restaurant that I am talking about is none other than the Varsity Drive-In located in downtown Atlanta, Georgia!

The Varsity was started in 1928 by a man by the name of Frank Gordy. Mr. Gordy was sitting on a $1,860 nest egg and with this he leased a house at 55 Avenue. He then constructed a small brick 14-by-35 foot building in the home’s front yard. The resturant had counter with 6 stools inside and a walk up window.

Gordy thought that he could attract folks who were walking from the nearby trolley stop at Peachtree Street and North Avenue to the restaurant.

Mr. Gordy named his restaurant “The Varsity” thinking that the restaurant would one day be on every college campus.

Once The Varsity opened its doors, it served around 300 customers. On its first day of business, The Varsity made $47.30. Keep in mind though menu items were not as high back in 1929 as they are today. Items such as hotdogs were 5 cents and the highest item on the menu was 10 cents.
