Amid animal shelter upgrade, city sees ‘crucial’ need for adoptions, fosters

Tallahassee-Leon County Animal Services has released more information on the upcoming renovations with further explanation on what’s to come and how the community can get involved through adoption.

In a press release from the city, staff shared that the renovations, which begin later this month and will last for nine months, will look “to improve the quality of life for its furry visitors, boost operational efficiency and enhance the adoption experience.”

“Construction is anticipated to last nine months resulting in limited space for dogs, making it crucial to find adoptable homes or foster placements immediately,” the city writes. “To reduce the number of dogs entering the shelter, intakes will be limited to critical needs.”

The new information comes after volunteers and members of the shelter approached the city commission at their meeting in August to share their concerns for the animals housed in the services center. They asked the city, as well as the county who co-owns the shelter, for support during the transition period.
