Erie police: Man admits to repeatedly stabbing woman in eastside home, causing her death

Emergency responders rushed to an East Ninth Street residence in Erie early Thursday morning after a man called 911 and stated he stabbed a woman and was still in possession of a 13-inch curved kitchen knife, according to city police.

Officers arrived at the residence and encountered a man who exited the house and stated, “It’s all me,” investigators reported.

Police then went in the home and said they found an unresponsive female with multiple stab wounds.

The man who police said admitted to stabbing the woman, 40-year-old Joel M. Barnett, was taken into custody and was later arraigned on criminal homicide, first-degree murder, aggravated assault and other charges in the death of the woman, whose name is not being released pending the completion of an autopsy Thursday.

Erie 3rd Ward District Judge Alison Scarpitti placed Barnett in the Erie County Prison without bond following his arraignment at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. A lawyer for Barnett was not listed on his criminal docket sheet.
