First Alert Weather Day: Turning very hot today & tomorrow

Good morning! Today is a First Alert Weather Day for the region with the expectation of even hotter weather this afternoon. High pressure continues to strengthen overhead, and an east wind will be developing later today. That east wind will do a couple of things: dry our air and bring additional wildfire smoke west of the Cascades. Drier air will allow temperatures to rise more rapidly. Expect highs to reach about 100 degrees or so from Portland to Salem. Parts of the North Coast will likely reach about 90 degrees. Unfortunately, we’ll probably deal with an increase in surface level smoke today which could impact air quality. I’d expect air quality levels to dip into the “moderate” to “unhealthy for sensitive groups” range. If you have heart or lung issues, you should probably limit your time outdoors. The heat alone should keep many of us inside today, especially between about 2-6 P.M.
