Columbus police: Man drove home, shot intruder following security system alert

A North Linden man received an alert on his phone that his security system detected someone breaking into his garage early Thursday. So he drove home from work to confront the intruder and shot him, Columbus police said.

The confrontation happened about 8:30 a.m. Thursday, at a home on the 1600 block of Audrey Road. The homeowner returned home and encountered the man holding items from his garage, Columbus police Sgt. James Fuqua said.

The homeowner then called 911 after the shooting, and police took him into custody.

At about 11:45 a.m. Thursday, detectives were interviewing the homeowner, and Fuqua said he could face criminal charges.

The man who suffered the gunshot was transported to the hospital in critical condition but has since been upgraded to stable condition, Fuqua said.

“We’re not clear on the specifics yet, but we do know that the homeowner fired several shots, striking the suspect at least once in the torso,” Fuqua said.
