Man sentenced to years in prison for mPerks scheme

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man who stole Meijer mPerks account logins and sold them on the internet, gaining hundreds of thousands of dollars, will spend years in prison.

Nicholas Mui was sentenced Thursday to five to 20 years in prison for conducting a criminal enterprise, according to court records.

He pleaded guilty to that charge in July. As part of his plea deal with the state, seven felony counts of identity theft and a count of using a computer to commit a crime were dismissed. The deal also requires Mui to turn over his computer tower and around $630,000 in frozen cryptocurrency and cash to the state.

Meijer, Michigan State Police and the state Attorney General’s Office launched a joint investigation after the West Michigan-based retail giant started getting complaints from customers of vanishing rewards points in the spring of 2023. Investigators say Mui got his hands on hacked mPerks account information and then sold them online, after which the purchasers used the legitimate owners’ mPerks points for themselves.
