GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) —  Police in Greensboro are investigating a deadly crash involving a train and a forklift.

Police confirmed just before noon that the crash was fatal, between an Amtrak train and DH Griffin forklift.

An Amtrak passenger train was going north while a JGL telescoping boom lift was being operated by Margarito Alfonso-Cruz, 51, of Greensboro, east on Hilltop Road across the grade crossing.

When the lift was about halfway across the tracks, the crossing lights and stop arms were activated due to the oncoming train.

Alfonso-Cruz tried to back up when one of the stop arms came down on the lift.

The train then crashed the lift at the grade crossing, and Alfonso-Cruz was killed.

Hilltop Road was closed near Fairfax Road and Roediger Drive until around 1:30 p.m.
