New Loxley fire station proposed – what you should know

LOXLEY, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Mayor Richard Teal says a new fire station could be in Loxley’s future.

The new station — proposed for County Road 64, about a half-mile east of Highway 59 — is in the early planning stages after the Fire Department Committee approved a motion to begin the process.

If the City Council approves the project, it could become a reality in two years, News 5 has learned. The current fire station building on Railroad Street would become the new city hall.

The Loxley Volunteer Fire Department currently has 30 to 35 volunteer firefighters, according to its website. City officials said a new station would allow the department to grow its team — and even include full-time, paid members.

A few volunteer firefighters said they are excited about the proposal.

“So for some of us, it’s bittersweet; like I joined this fire department when I was 16 in 2008, and I’ve been here my whole adult life,” Loxley Volunteer Fire Department Training Officer and Public Education Coordinator CJ Amerson said.
