Locals remember those lost to suicide, raise funds for prevention with annual walk

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Suicide is a leading cause of death in the US. On Saturday, volunteers in the Metro gathered to promote suicide prevention.

The annual Albuquerque ‘Out of the Darkness Community Walk’ was hosted by the New Mexico chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

The event gives those who attend a chance to share their experiences and spend time with others going through similar issues.

“It really is such an important topic, and it is just as important as physical health, and part of the reason why it’s called ‘Out of the Darkness Walk’ is to shine a light on this very important crisis we are going through and know we are not alone, and this is something we are all doing together,” said Alix Herrera, a member of the foundation.

All the money raised for the event goes toward education, research, and support for survivors.
