Local game official passes away after dedicating decades to sports

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Long-time game official Gary Spitzberg was a part of the high school football experience for years. Spitzberg passed away Thursday night after a battle with cancer.

Spitzberg officiated games for over 40 years, a long and distinguished career that got him a spot in the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame.

Prior to that, he coached football at West Mesa, and for over 50 years, he also helped officiate track and field meets for high schools and the University of New Mexico. He and his wife, Hallie, most recently worked at Milne Stadium.

Funeral services will be at Fairview Cemetery on Monday at 11 a.m. Spitzberg was 79 and would have celebrated his 80th birthday this Monday.
