Tropical Storm Francine forms Monday, expected to affect Coastal Bend

A tropical cyclone in the Gulf of Mexico became Tropical Storm Francine Monday and could become a Category 1 hurricane Wednesday.

The National Weather Service of Corpus Christi said the system grew Sunday evening, but models show it will continue north and make landfall along the northwest Gulf Coast near the border of Texas and Louisiana.

The storm will bring long period swells to the Gulf Coast, resulting in a high risk of rip current, minor coastal flooding along all beach areas and high surf.

South Texans can also expect a 30% to 50% probability of tropical-storm-force winds, about 1 to 2 inches of rainfall and up to 3 feet of inundation Tuesday night through Wednesday.

It is recommended to secure lightweight objects in your yard, including awnings, carports, sheds and unanchored mobile homes. Due to strong winds, residents can expect broken tree limbs, fences blown over, roads impassible from debris and scattered power outages.

In a news release, AEP Texas said it is monitoring the disturbance and urges people to prioritize safety by avoiding any downed power lines and using portable generators correctly.
