Birmingham police recover stolen vehicle, 15-year-old and 14-year-old taken into custody

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — East Precinct officers of the Birmingham Police Department were notified Sunday morning of two incidents where a Kia or Hyundai was stolen. There were also multiple incidents throughout East Birmingham where Kias or Hyundais were damaged in attempted theft.

The stolen Hyundai Elantra was recovered in the 8200 block of 5th Avenue South. Officers took into custody a 15-year-old male and a 14-year-old male who fled from the vehicle.

BPD said that after recovering the stolen vehicles, officers linked stolen property inside the vehicle to at least one early morning car break-in that occurred in the South Eastlake neighborhood.

Here are some of the tips that BPD says can help prevent car theft:

  • Invest in a steering wheel anti-theft lock.
  • Park in the garage (if available).
  • Face home cameras toward vehicles.
  • Never confront a would-be car thief.
