USA Health Children’s and Women’s Hospital in Mobile has just opened the area’s first Safe Haven Baby Box, offering a safe and anonymous way for parents to surrender their newborns.

A dedication ceremony was held last Wednesday to mark the occasion, with the hospital now providing a secure option for parents who may be in a desperate situation.

The baby box allows infants to be surrendered without any direct contact or identification, ensuring the child will receive immediate care from hospital staff.

How the Baby Box Works

When a parent places a newborn inside the baby box, an alarm immediately notifies hospital staff to retrieve the baby and perform a medical examination.

From there, the Alabama Department of Human Resources will be contacted to ensure the baby is safely placed in the adoption system.

These boxes are designed to offer a safe alternative for parents who feel they have no other option, providing peace of mind knowing the child will be cared for.
