VDOT plans new designs for Mayo Bridge, following public survey

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — After a public survey, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is designing a new structure for the replacement of the Mayo Bridge to fit the best interest of the public.

According to VDOT, the original plan for the Mayo Bridge included the replacement of the superstructure of the bridge while keeping the existing substructure (piers) that are in place.

However, after analyzing the existing piers, the cost to reuse the piers increased which concluded that replacing the Mayo Bridge with a new structure would have the public’s best interest. At this moment, the estimated cost of the project is to be determined.

VDOT said the newly proposed developments would extend the life of the Mayo Bridge.

VDOT’s public survey on the conditions and priorities of the Mayo Bridge was open this summer from May 9 through June 9. The results from the public survey can be viewed here .

The results from the survey were reviewed by VDOT and the City of Richmond and options were developed for replacing the bridge through a design visuals.
