Horry County golf pros finish 100-hole marathon in name of charity

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Five golfers on Monday were on the course from dusk to dawn, playing a marathon 100 holes all in the name of charity.

The Grande Dunes Members Club has raised more than $50,000 over the last four years for Folds of Honor, an organization that supports families of fallen soldiers, disabled veterans and first responders.

Players teed off at 7 a.m., with some swinging through until the evening. Participants said the game means that much more to them knowing their efforts are helping those in need.

“Our goal was $10,000, and we hit it. It’s great to be able to know we’re doing what we wanted to do. That $10,000 is going to get three scholarships. So we’re proud of that,” said Joe De Maio, Grande Dunes’ head golf professional.

Grande Dunes shut down for the day to accommodate the players.

“Yeah, we get to play golf, and it’s part of our job. But this is a little bit extra. It’s a little bit more fun. I’ve got a great team here, and nothing but support from the membership and with our owners and club in general,” De Maio said.
