Inmate charged with attacking correctional officer

PUNTA GORDA — A Charlotte Correctional Institution inmate faces charges after allegedly attacking a corrections officer with a weapon nearly a year ago.

Kevin Dwayne Jones, 44, was charged with one count each of aggravated battery against a first responder and resisting arrest with violence.

In a post-Miranda warning interview, Jones allegedly admitted to having a weapon in his cell but denied stabbing anyone.

Florida Department of Corrections investigators allege Jones struck a corrections officer with a closed fist while holding the weapon. In the process of protecting himself, the officer’s finger was cut.

Jones was sentenced in 2019 to a seven-year prison sentence after a conviction for burglary with assault.

According to a FDOC report, Jones was seen by CCI corrections officers as “being disruptive” in his cell on Oct. 9, 2023.

He refused to be placed into handcuffs to be moved out of his cell.

One correctional officer reported seeing a weapon in Jones’ hand, which the inmate threatened to use on anyone coming into his cell.
