Man runs 108 miles to Oklahoma for suicide prevention and awareness

DERBY, Kan. (KSNW) – Trey Dulaney is running 108 miles from Derby to Stillwater, Oklahoma, to raise awareness for suicide prevention.

“I’ve gone through a pretty bad time in my life where I made some mistakes, and it’s caused me to spiral down to what I felt like was rock bottom,” Dulaney said. “It was a place I felt like I could have possibly quit. I have been trying to push through, and I want to advocate for people at rock bottom. It’s not a time to quit, so keep fighting no matter how hard it gets.”

Dulaney expects to get to Stillwater on Wednesday morning.

Michelle Calvert with COMCARE says it’s important to know the signs and symptoms of suicide. That includes depression, showing change in mood or behavior, giving things away, or talking about death on social media. In youth, a sign could be drawing pictures related to death. Another sign is hopelessness.

“Hopelessness sounds like, ‘Why am I even doing this? This is never going to change. It’s never going to get better.’ If you hear those words or see other signs from somebody, you want to ask them the question, are you okay? You want to say things like, ‘Hey, I’m really worried about you. What can we do to help you feel better,’” Calvert said.
