Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home in Tillmans Corner hosted the ceremony.

Dustin Turner, the funeral home’s general manager, said they work with the cemetery each year to unite the community and honor the fallen.

Referring to those who died during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, he said, “They got up, they put on their clothes, they brush their teeth, ate breakfast, they kissed their spouse and children goodbye, and they went to work.”

“Nobody knew that a couple hours later they would all be tragically killed. And we never want to forget that.”

Annually, the wreath is laid, and the flag is lowered in the South Alabama First Responders Hero Garden. This year, however, due to tropical storm weather, the event had to be moved inside the funeral home.
