Some say St. Pete ‘caught off guard’ with storm, flooding and residents want solutions

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — With a chance for more rain in our area, people living in non-flood zones in St. Petersburg want relief from the city after flooding shook their communities last week.

Some say the city keeps getting caught off guard with these storms with an aging stormwater system. Residents ask how long can that be an excuse when it’s their homes and cars taking a hit?

There was flooding in apartment complexes and neighborhoods. Stephanie Spencer cleaned out her car that was parked on the road.

“I’m emptying out my car because it got caught in the flooding and it’s totaled,” Spencer said. “It’s got to be a problem with the drainage systems around here. That’s never happened before.”

There were parts of St. Petersburg that were not ready for this storm.

“Standard Florida drainage systems are not built to handle that much water in that time period,” Corey Givens Jr., a candidate for St. Petersburg City Council said while reading a statement from the wastewater treatment plant supervisor.
