Insurance mix-up leads to license, tags confiscated by deputy Labor Day weekend

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Ruskin man said his family’s Labor Day weekend was ruined when he was pulled over by a sheriff’s deputy because of a reporting error that led the state to suspend his license, believing he did not have insurance on one of his family’s vehicles.

Nelson Irizarry pulled in near a boat ramp in Tierra Verde he was abruptly pulled over.

Dashcam video from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office shows a deputy informing Irizarry that his driver’s license had been suspended since May. His license was confiscated and he could only watch as the deputy seized the tags to his truck and his boat, all in front of his family, leaving them no way easy way back home.

“I was in awe,” he said. “I had no clue what he was talking about and furthermore I explained that to him. I said, “Look, you have to give me a reason. You’re telling me you’re taking my license and my tags and you’re not giving me a reason.”

He had to wait until the Tuesday after the Labor Day holiday to go the DMV where he said he was told Geico had mistakenly reported to the state that he didn’t have car insurance on one of his vehicles, triggering the suspension.
