‘It’s our medical school:’ History in the making as construction starts in Fayetteville

Community leaders gathered Tuesday morning on the campus of Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for the historic groundbreaking of Fayetteville’s first medical school.

Political leaders, donors, community organizations and healthcare professionals were among the hundreds of community stakeholders in the audience as Methodist University and Cape Fear Valley leaders announced the start of construction on the five-story Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine on the Cape Fear Valley campus along Village Drive, according to a news release from Methodist University.

The $60-plus million medical school was first announced in February 2023 .

“This is an historic occasion, and I’m privileged to be a part of it,” Methodist University President Stanley T. Wearden said during the ceremony. “This is a collective project, and it has a lot of people behind it who believe in it deeply. At Methodist University, we’re committed to students and alumni success in the context of a mission that values community service, which is why we have our various Health Sciences programs that will soon include the Methodist University Cape Fear Valley School of Medicine. But this is not about MU alone. Without our partnership with Cape Fear Valley Health, this could not happen.”
