Joe Wilson seeks medical attention after reported collapse at event

Longtime Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) is being evaluated at a local hospital in Washington, D.C. , after falling ill Tuesday night, according to the congressman’s office.

The news comes after reports that Wilson collapsed at an event the day after House lawmakers returned to Capitol Hill after a monthlong recess.

Wilson, 77, has represented South Carolina’s 2nd Congressional District since 2001. He is the latest member to suffer health-related problems after the late Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) died on Aug. 21 after more than a month of in-and-out hospital stays related to a respiratory infection.

Longtime Rep. Shelia Jackson Lee (D-TX) died on July 19, just one month after announcing that she had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Rep. Donald Payne Jr. (D-NJ) also died in late April after suffering a “cardiac episode” on April 6 that kept him on a ventilator in the intensive care unit at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.
