City of Spokane phasing out TRAC shelter beds ahead of October closure

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Trent Resource and Assistance Center will finally close its doors at the end of October.

In May, Mayor Lisa Brown announced the city would close the TRAC shelter and establish smaller, scattered shelters across Spokane.

The scattered-shelter model is meant to provide people experiencing homelessness with more individualized help.

According to a recent document released by the City of Spokane’s Urban Experience Committee, there is a plan in place to phase out the amount of beds available at TRAC.

The city is working with existing emergency shelters to provide resources and beds during the closure.

At the beginning of September, the shelter had 225 beds, and by the end of October, it will have zero.

The city said it is working on allocating funds to open more scattered shelters, in addition to the two  that are already open, both of which are already at capacity.

You can find the shelter’s phase-out plan below:

  • Sept 1: 225 beds
  • Sept 9: 200 beds
  • Sept 16: 175 beds
  • Oct 1: 125 beds
  • Oct 15: 75 beds
  • November 1: 0 beds
