Mar-a-Lago road closure dispute: Palm Beach mayor thanks supporters; no word for critics

Palm Beach Mayor Danielle Moore took a few minutes at Tuesday’s Town Council meeting to thank residents for their support following her call last month for town staff to research the possibility of closing the Mar-a-Lago Club when South Ocean Boulevard is closed as well.

Her comments at the Aug. 13 meeting brought international attention to the town as officials grapple with the effects of the U.S. Secret Service-ordered closure of South Ocean Boulevard near former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club when he is home.

Since that meeting, the town, Secret Service and Mar-a-Lago reached a deal to amend the closure so the road from the Southern Boulevard traffic circle north to South County Road is not shut down 24 hours a day, seven days a week, even when Trump is not there. Under the agreement, the road reopens when the Republican nominee for president leaves for a long enough stretch that it makes logistical sense to remove the many temporary barriers in place for the two checkpoints, which are staffed by Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputies.
