- Mat-Su election officials this week removed two candidates from the borough’s November ballot after they failed to file a required state financial disclosure form by an August deadline. Hillary Palmer was running for mayor and Steve Ault was running for Assembly District 3. Two candidates remain in the District 3 race, including incumbent Assembly member Dee Mckee, while Borough Mayor Edna DeVries will now appear on the ballot uncontested.
- Both Palmer and Ault were initially certified in error by Borough clerk Lonnie McKechnie as having met all election requirements, but were disqualified Monday by McKechnie after a legal review determined they do not legally qualify because they had not filed the form.
- Palmer and Ault, both first-time candidates, said the form was missed in part because the process is confusing and because of unclear information provided by the clerk’s office and the state financial disclosure website.
