Incumbent lawmakers nearly sweep in RI primary races

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — It was a good night for incumbents in the Rhode Island General Assembly on Tuesday.

Out of the 18 contested primary races, almost every sitting lawmaker came out on top, according to initial results from the R.I. Board of Elections.

In Providence, two lawmakers who were initially thought to have a race on their hands were state Reps. Enrique Sanchez and Grace Diaz in House Districts 9 and 11, respectively.

Sanchez won by a healthy margin in a three-way Democratic primary versus former state Rep. Anastacia Williams — whom he unseated in 2022 — and Santos Javier.

Diaz had a challenge from Tania Quezada — her former campaign manager — and also had a decisive victory .

Aside from the mayoral race in Cranston , the city had a few closely watched state legislative Democratic primaries. In the House, District 14 saw state Rep. Charlene Lima prevail in a 2022 rematch versus Giona Picheco and District 16’s result was an even bigger victory for state Rep. Brandon Potter over Joseph Graziano.
