Madison County to install bench honoring first responders of Sept. 11

After more than two years of effort, a bench honoring the volunteer first responders from Madison County who traveled to New York City in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks will be dedicated in Wampsville.

The ceremony is set for 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in front of the Health and Human Services Building at 133 N. Court Street. County officials, including Madison County Board Chairman James J. Cunningham and County Administrator Mark Scimone, are expected to attend.

The bench is the result of efforts by AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers with the Madison County Office for the Aging, Inc.’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). Funds were raised through a basket raffle and private donations.

The bench joins a sugar maple planted in 2021 near the playground off Court Street to mark the 20 th Anniversary of the attack.

Mary Pardee, Jane Ondich, Debbie Phelps, and Paul “Pete” Walrod were members of the ad hoc committee who worked on the project.
