Trial against former Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Deputy continues with questions about crime scene

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The trial against former Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Borrecco continued on Wednesday with lawyers discussing how the crime scene was handled by the Albuquerque Police Department. Borrecco is accused of being drunk and pulling a gun on two men at a Circle K on Osuna while off-duty in January 2024.

The defense has questioned the way APD handled the crime scene, saying the evidence could have been tampered with. The state called a crime scene specialist to the stand who helped process the scene. She said everything was done by the book. Borrecco’s defense claims that APD didn’t keep the alleged victims separate, giving them a chance to match their stories.

Borrecco is on trial for assault and gun charges. If convicted, Borrecco faces up to a year and a half behind bars. Closing arguments are scheduled to be heard Thursday.
