Birmingham invests $12.9 million into road resurfacing projects

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — 36 miles of Birmingham’s streets are being repaved as part of the city’s 2017 road resurfacing plan.

246 street segments will get a facelift this fall. The $12.9 million in work includes more than just paving. Some streets will see sidewalk repairs and safer roads.

“Our department of transportation goes out and does an assessment of those particular streets to determine if they need bicycle lanes or pedestrian lanes or anything along those lines,” said Rick Journey, Birmingham’s communications director.

Journey says the current repaving project marks the end of a five-year plan.

“When Mayor Woodfin came in, he said, ‘Let’s take this list of streets that have already been identified and approved by the council and put the funding behind this,’” added Journey.

The work has some Birmingham residents excited. Melody King says she has been waiting for her road to be resurfaced for a while. King has lived in Birmingham for almost 30 years, and she says the paving in front of her home has changed her neighborhood.
