Richmonders urged to stock emergency kit, plan for natural disasters

Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) – September is National Preparedness Month, and city leaders are reminding residents to make sure they have all the tools they need to prepare for disasters or emergency situations.

“Being prepared for emergencies and disasters will help make it easier for you and your loved ones to recover,” City of Richmond officials said. “You can build a disaster supply kit, make a family plan, and make sure you have a way to stay informed during a disaster.”

City officials said staying prepared for emergency situations is a “collective” responsibility. Richmonders are urged to plan ahead and prepare for natural disasters as the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season reaches its peak.

“City residents can play a crucial role in fostering a culture of preparedness, encouraging others to take action, and fostering a sense of unity in times of crisis,” Stephen Willoughby, the director of the Richmond Department of Emergency Communications, said in a statement .

The Department said residents’ emergency kits should contain at least three days worth of supplies. More information about emergency resources in Richmond and what to pack in a disaster supply kit can be found at ready.go v.
