Kansas veteran continues to serve after more than three decades

AUGUSTA, Kan. (KSNW)—For more than thirty years, an Augusta woman served our country, and she’s still helping those who wear uniforms today.

Florence, Kansas native Brenda Corbin didn’t plan to join the military.

“Well,” laughed Corbin. “Young and dumb and dropped out of college, so I had to have money for school.”

Kansas Air Force veteran went on over 700 flights across the world

She joined the Army Reserves at 23 years old.

“So I was old in basic training,” Corbin said.

It was February when she headed to Fort Dix, New Jersey.

“Idiot. Cold,” laughed Corbin. “I was afraid I was going to chicken out, so I took the first one I could get.

She became an X-ray tech.

“And right after I got out of school, here comes the Desert Storm,” Corbin said.

She served in a hospital unit in Saudi Arabia. Her unit was kept further back than the active duty units, which meant she often treated civilians.

“I remember one time we had three 10-year-olds. All three of those 10-year-olds had lost their leg in a cluster bomb explosion,” Corbin said.
