Manatee County residents call for development moratorium after Debby’s floods

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — It’s been on month since Hurricane Debby caused widespread flooding, and homeowners are still recovering.

“Eventually we’ll be able to rebuild and come back better, but it’s going to take a while,” Dalton Nelson said.  “Unfortunately, it’s probably not going to be here.”

Manatee County commissioners are working to address concerns and could be one step closer to finding a solution.

This week, officials reported the county sustained $56 million in damage from the storm.

Some residents are calling on county commissioners to make a bold decision about new construction projects with hopes of resolving drainage issues.

“We the community are asking for a temporary moratorium on all new proposed and not started developments until we can get everything straightened out with the flooding problem and get it under control,” said Nelson.

Nelson is facing a daunting decision about the future.

His family is still reeling weeks after Debby’s wrath.  The financial strain and fatigue is fueling his frustration.
