San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office refuses to answer questions regarding visit to reporter’s home

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office is pursuing an ongoing investigation that led two deputies to knock on the door of a Record reporter’s home recently, questioning her about a document central to the newspaper’s coverage of Stockton Unified School District Trustee AngelAnn Flores’ criminal case .

At about noon on Aug. 30, sheriff’s deputies Anthony Ancrile and Leonard Cagulada knocked on the door of Record reporter Aaron Leathley’s home. When asked, the deputies told the reporter they were part of AGNET — the Agriculture, Gangs, and Narcotics Enforcement Team under the sheriff’s Special Services Division.

According to Leathley, Cagulada claimed the reporter was sent a “cease-and-desist” via email about documents The Record obtained from San Joaquin County Superior Court in November 2023. Cagulada clarified he was referring to a search warrant associated with the criminal case against Flores.

The deputy questioned Leathley several times, saying, “We just want to know what happened,” according to the reporter. It was unclear if the deputy was referring to the warrant or to the alleged cease-and-desist, Leathley said.
