Swensons brings back triple Galley Boy to celebrate National Cheeseburger Day

An Akron institution know for its burgers has big plans for National Cheeseburger Day .

While the day that is set aside to celebrate all things cheeseburger is Sept. 18, Swensons is celebrating for more than just one day.

The family-owned drive-up chain where servers sprint to cars to take orders is bringing back its triple-patty signature Galley Boy for a limited time.

The drive-in’s famous cheeseburger consists of patties topped with gooey cheese and two special sauces on a toasted bun, garnished with a green olive on a toothpick.

Swensons has a lot to celebrate as it is marking its 90th anniversary this year.

It all started with Wesley T. “Pop” Swenson and Guy Whitt flipping burgers and selling them out of the back of a car near Akron’s Buchtel High School.

The family-owned chain has since expanded beyond Akron and now has restaurants with its signature curb service in Cleveland, Columbus and Indianapolis.

And on Sept. 18 to mark National Cheeseburger Day, Swensons will be offering its commemorative 90th anniversary pint glass for 90 cents.
