Major Applewhite stresses need to clean up penalties after 77 point win

Coming off losses to North Texas and Ohio, the South Alabama Jaguars needed a strong performance against Northwestern State.

They got one and a whole lot more.

The Jaguars amassed over 600 yards of offense in a heavily one-sided game, resulting in a fourth quarter shortened to just six minutes.

However, the coach made it clear in the postgame press conference that while proud of the effort there’s always room for improvement.

Major Applewhite, the former Texas Longhorns star and now the Head Coach of South Alabama, talked about his first win leading the Jaguars.

“Proud of the way our guys responded coming off a loss…I know people say that a lot and it might be cliche, but they did a great job getting the guys centered after a loss. Sunday night we had a good walk-through. Monday and Tuesday were excellent practices. Wednesday, we worked a little bit harder than we normally would before a game. There was no complaining. I was proud of the way they came out in the second half. When you get up by 42 points human nature sets in and some complacency can be found, but it didn’t matter who was in the ball game they were playing hard.”
