‘It was a dinosaur.’ Mississippi hunter bags massive 13-foot alligator

When it comes to hunting alligators, there’s a lot of luck involved. Unlike hunting other species in Mississippi , hunters have to enter a drawing and be randomly drawn to receive permits that allow them to harvest two alligators from public waters.

The tags are highly sought after and thousands apply each year for a total of about 950 available permits. So, for someone to be drawn the first time they applied might be chalked up to beginner’s luck.

But one hunter’s luck kept going. Not only was she drawn the first time she applied, but it was also her husband’s first time to apply and he was drawn, too. Then, there was the massive, trophy-size 13-foot alligator she caught.

“I was very shocked,” said Kellie Amason of Poplar Creek , a community in Montgomery County. “I never in a million years thought I’d get drawn. I don’t have very good luck.”

On Sept. 6, Amason was hunting with her husband, Carl Wayne Amason on the Yazoo River. Since they were both new to alligator hunting, they went with a crew of experienced hunters that included Kent Britton and Kenny Britton, both of Poplar Creek, Bubba Steen and Adam Steen, both of Ethel, and Flint Williamson of Brandon.
