State Sen. Sandra Cano resigns to take new job

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — State Sen. Sandra Cano, who’s been seen as a rising star in Rhode Island politics since her underdog run for Congress last year, announced Thursday she is resigning her seat to take a new job.

Cano, 40, said she will be leaving the General Assembly for a job she will announce “in the coming weeks.” She is expected to take a position with the U.S. Small Business Administration. Cano’s day job in recent years has been as Pawtucket’s head of economic development.

“Representing the people of Pawtucket in the Senate has been the honor of my lifetime,” Cano said in a statement. “I hope and believe that I was able to bring about impactful change through my service, and I look forward to continuing to contribute to building stronger communities in new ways in the future.”

“The indefatigable advocacy she brought to the Senate has made an extraordinary impact that will benefit Rhode Islanders for generations to come,” said Senate President Dominick Ruggerio. “While I hate to see her leave the Senate, I know that she will continue to make a tremendous difference working with her in a new capacity.”
