9/13/24: WMU pres to retire

WMU’s president has announced he’ll retire next year. Also: The governor is appealing for disaster funds for Southwest Michigan. And Kalamazoo is cleaning up trash. Western Michigan University President Edward Montgomery announced yesterday that he will retire next summer. In a message posted on the university’s website, Montgomery cited his age (he turns 70 next year) and recent improvements in student retention as reasons for his retirement. “In my first State of the University address in 2017, I charged us with improving retention and graduation rates, diversifying our revenue streams, and becoming a college of choice,” he said. “It is undeniable that we have momentum on all three counts.”
