Rockford’s La Onda kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month with an open invitation

How much do you know about the history of Hispanic and Latino culture and community in Rockford?

In recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Rockford Register Star has partnered with La Onda, a newly-formed nonprofit organization, to help share and celebrate the impact of Hispanic and Latino people, businesses and organizations in and around the Rockford area.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is recognized each year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. Visit rrstar.com or the Rockford Register Star newspaper each day to read about the people and places that make up Rockford’s Latino community.

Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, highlights the rich culture, history, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans in the United States. The month honors the diverse backgrounds of people with roots in Spain, Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean.

The celebration begins on Sept. 15, marking the independence days of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16, with Chile observing its national holiday on September 18. Throughout the month, various events will highlight Hispanic culture, promoting understanding and appreciation of the lasting influence of Hispanic communities.
