A Walk in the Park: Looking for deer? This Rockford area forest preserve is a good spot

Deer Run Forest Preserve is a prime wildlife viewing spot located in Cherry Valley, and is one of the many forest preserves located in Winnebago County.

Deer Run is known for its trails — for both hiking and horseback riding — and connects with Oak Ridge Forest Preserve to the south. It’s a popular place to spot deer, hence the name, and other wildlife include Ospreys and Blanding’s Turtles.

History: The history of Deer Run is mostly unknown, Forest Preserves of Winnebago County acquired the land in 1993. Since then, the preserve has become a prairie grass sanctuary and is home to many wildlife from frogs and turtles to dragonflies and herons.
