Louisiana launches app to provide emergency information for hurricanes, disaster recovery

Looking for a distribution center for ice, food, water or tarps? There’s an app for that.

Louisiana Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Director Jaques Thibodeaux said the department created an app that those recovering from disasters can use to easily locate distribution centers, also known as PODs. The app is called “Get A Game Plan.” The acronym stands for point of distribution center.

Speaking in Houma on Friday, Thibodeaux said he wanted to streamline locating distribution sites, and he is proud of what the department delivered.

“Go to ‘get a game plan app’ and you can see all the POD locations,” Thibodeaux said. “Like a movie theater. Watch this.”

Thibodeaux pushed two buttons on his phone and showed a list of six distribution centers. With a third button, he opened Google Map directions to the Bayou Blue Fire Department Central Station distribution center, where people can obtain water, ice and meals.

Those searching for it would do best to download it from getagameplan.org , GOHSEP’s web page, as searching for it on the Android store will find a collection of sports apps. The app provides a collection of tools for everything hurricane related, Thibodeaux said.
