Kent Patrol Officer arrests wanted felon, recovers illegal drugs during traffic stop

A routine neighborhood patrol on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2024 led to the arrest of a man with two felony warrants and the recovery of a significant quantity of illegal drugs, according to Kent Police.

At around 5:46 p.m., Officer Baughman was patrolling a neighborhood with a known history of drug-related crimes on S. Bridges Street when he spotted a passenger in a passing vehicle whom he recognized as a man wanted on two felony warrants.

The 47-year-old Kent resident had outstanding felony warrants totaling $150,000 in King County for possession of a firearm. Officer Baughman conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle, which was occupied by the suspect, the driver, and another passenger. The suspect had been previously contacted by police and was known to have possessed explosives in the past.

Out of caution, police requested assistance from the Port of Seattle Police Department Bomb Squad. The bomb squad quickly responded and cleared the vehicle, determining no explosives were present.

The suspect was then taken into custody. In addition to the felony warrants, officers found a significant amount of illegal drugs in the vehicle. The suspect later requested medical assistance and was transported to a Seattle hospital, where he was medically cleared for booking into King County Jail. Further charges are pending as detectives continue their investigation.
