Nevada State Veterans Memorial moving to new home in northwest valley

LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) — A special ceremony was held Friday morning to say farewell to the old location of the Nevada State Veterans Memorial at Washington Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard.

The memorial will be moving to the Thunderbird Family Sports Complex on Durango Drive near Centennial Parkway.

The 18 larger-than-life statues showcase our brave military heroes from the Revolutionary War to Afghanistan.

“This memorial explains that so it needs to be in a public place where people can take their families,” Retired Marine Corporal Vincent Palmieri Junior of the Purple Heart Chapter 711 Las Vegas explained.

It was the only thing left behind at the Grant Sawyer building after the state moved to a new location by the airport. The new location does not have enough room to accommodate the memorial.

“We needed a location that would have the ability to fit the memorial, have parking, proper lighting, and bathroom facilities where everyone could come and see it. We found the perfect park which already has a military theme to it,” Gold Star wife Samantha Bivins explained during Friday’s ceremony.
