Arizona wildfires burn over 10,000 acres near Phoenix, Payson

Three major Arizona wildfires burned across metro Phoenix on Thursday night, and two more fires northeast of the Valley were burning near high-country communities.

The five fires had engulfed more than 10,000 acres of land so far and were uncontained.

The Gate, Siphon and Point fires — all on the outskirts of metro Phoenix — had scorched more than 5,000 acres in all, according to fire officials.

The Preacher and West fires near Payson and Pine were at nearly 4,000 acres total, according to Tonto National Forest officials.

Gate Fire burns in northeast Scottsdale

On Thursday evening, the newly started Gate Fire burned northeast of Scottsdale near 128th Street and Ranch Gate Road, burning about 100 acres, according to the Scottsdale Fire Department.

About 150 firefighters were actively working to contain the blaze as the sun set, according to the department.

Two homes were evacuated for a few hours on Thursday, but the residents had been allowed to return by about 8:30 p.m., according to fire Capt. Dave Folio.
