Differing accounts: That fatal shooting in NW Marion either was accidental or a family fight.

Marion County Sheriff’s officials have released additional information regarding the shooting death of a man earlier this week in northwest Marion.

Authorities said Nicolas Loren Eckblad, 40, has been arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in connection with the death of Tony Lee Diamond, who is the son of Eckblad’s estranged wife.

The 44-year-old victim was shot on Sept. 10 and transported to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital. Diamond later died at the hospital.

According to a probable cause report from Detective Hunter McMurray, the shooting either was an accident (as Eckblad says) or the result of some sort of family dispute. The prosecutor’s office will determine if additional charges will be brought.

The investigation started with a 4:56 p.m. 911 call from a woman who said Diamond had been shot by a man.

Deputies arrived at the location, the 4900 block of Northwest 56th Terrace, and arrested Eckblad. Deputies Lucas Karr, Justin Young and Joseph Spratlin were at the incident scene.
