Rowdy, intoxicated PC students disrupted city neighborhoods. Now the school is apologizing

PROVIDENCE – Providence College has apologized for the behavior of some students and pledged to work on being better neighbors after the City Council sent the college president a strongly worded letter complaining about “rowdy and disruptive” behavior of students at off-campus parties.

Starting Monday, the Catholic college said its president, Father Kenneth Sicard, will be meeting with Mayor Brett Smiley on a quarterly basis “to continue to explore ways to enhance relations between the College and the City of Providence.”

The City Council sent a letter to Sicard after residents complained of student misbehavior that started on the morning of Thursday, Aug. 29, when many students moved in, and continued through the Labor Day weekend.

“I am writing to express the deep frustration and disappointment felt by our community due to the repeated instancesof rowdy and disruptive behavior by Providence College students at off-campus parties,” Ward 14 Councilwoman Shelley T. Peterson wrote. “The conduct we’ve witnessed is deeply disrespectful to neighborhood residents. The positive qualities and accomplishments of your students and all that they bring to the community should not be overshadowed by this ongoing and unacceptable behavior.”
