Community meeting about future of Providence schools held

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A community conversation about what lies ahead for Providence’s public schools was hosted by Mayor Brett Smiley on Saturday.

“We need all of you to help us make progress on the metrics that we’ve identified,” Smiley said. “To give us feedback and advice on how we do a better job as a city and as a community, and then to demonstrate to RIDE and the K-12 board that we’re prepared.”

The discussion comes after a decision last month to extend the state takeover for another three years.

This meeting’s purpose was for students, parents and teachers to give feedback to the city as it works on the state’s “Turnaround Action Plan.”

“The state of Rhode Island developed a turnaround action plan as a road map for improving school performance and management,” Stephen Grace, director of recreation for the city, said.

There were also breakout groups for discussions in English and Spanish.

Another meeting will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14.
